System Administrator
| 06/1997 - 06/2001

- Responsible for the day-to-day operation of 45-computer Unix network of HP (HP-UX 10.20, 11.00), Sun SPARC (SunOS 4.1.x, Solaris 2.5 to 8), Linux, and SGI Irix systems. Also maintained 15+ machines operating standalone or in small groupings. Specific duties included basic system administration and software installation, system backups, web server management, mail system management, DNS, NFS, NIS, user problem resolution.
- When hired, System Administrator role managed computers only in faculty offices and research labs, while the main student lab was managed separately. Based on my recommendation, we reorganized into a single computer support team, which greatly reduced redundancy and allowed more centralized administration and better use of server resources.
- Handled most aspects of transition from all-HP system to heterogeneous environment for main computer system.
- Developed web-based system for internal project management, including automatic hyperlinking and ability to give clients access on a per-project basis.
- Assisted in administration of Windows NT/2000 systems as necessary, including creating a single set of scripts for user creation/removal across Windows and Unix.
- Conducted regular surveys of user community for self-assessment and to seek out ways to enhance our environment.
